Author Beth Helfter learned the basics of sewing as a child from her mother, but quilting was not part of her life until 1995, when she taught herself the art from a pattern in a magazine. That resulting first attempt at a quilt is truly pitiful, but it is still loved and honored since it taught her to love quilting.
