The Modern Quilt Guild introduces QuiltCon
QuiltCon, presented by The Modern Quilt Guild, will be an unrivaled international conference and show for modern quilters. It will include a juried modern quilt show with cash prizes, vendors, lectures and workshops from top modern quilters, and more.
QuiltCon will be held February 21-24, 2013, at the Austin Convention Center. The quilters of The Modern Quilt Guild bring a bold new aesthetic to a craft dominated by traditional and art quilting. The clean lines and stylish color schemes prevalent in modern quilting appeal to fans of sophisticated modern design. Founded in Los Angeles, California in 2009, the Guild has attracted a new generation of design-conscious quilters “It became obvious to us that the next step for our Modern Quilt Guild members was offer an event that was custom tailored for them. ” said Latifah Saafir, Founder and Board Member of The Modern Quilt Guild.
With workshops and lectures by Denyse Schmidt, Malka Dubrawsky, Elizabeth Hartman, Anna Maria Horner, Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr, no other quilt conference or show will offer such a complete experience for modern quilters. “We hope our conference attendees can learn new techniques and strengthen their quilting skills with the most influential and recognized modern quilters in the world.” said Alissa Haight Carlton, Founder and President of The Modern Quilt Guild.
QuiltCon will include a juried quilt show with hundreds of quilts and thousands of dollars in cash prizes. There will be two special exhibits; Denyse Schmidt’s Quilts and Modern Historical Quilts curated by Ellen Rushman, a graduate student of the International Quilt Study Center in Lincoln, Nebraska. Denyse Schmidt says, “I’m honored and excited to be a part of the inaugural QuiltCon. I look forward to participating in this groundbreaking event!” In addition, over 70 vendors will offer conference and show attendees a unique shopping experience geared toward the interests and tastes of modern quilters.Entries for the juried quilt show will be accepted starting on July 1, 2012. “We’re so excited to see quilts from Modern Quilt Guild members in this show! We hope that people who see the show will get some new ideas about what quilt design can be, particularly that it can still be fresh and relevant today.” said Elizabeth Hartman, Modern Quilt Guild Board Member.
Jacquie Gering, a Modern Quilt Guild Board Member says, “We are thrilled to announce that Janome, Michael Miller Fabrics, Robert Kaufman Fabrics and Stash Books have signed on to be the first sponsors of QuiltCon. Without their support, this event could not be possible.””C&T Publishing’s Stash Books is proud to be a sponsor of the first QuiltCon Modern Quilt Guild Conference. Stash Books has been a strong supporter and advocate of the modern quilting movement since its launch in late 2009. Stash Books is delighted to be a part of QuiltCon at the beginning and for many years to come.” said Amy Marson, Publisher of Stash Books.
“Janome America is very pleased to be a sponsor at the Modern Quilt Guild’s first QuiltCon. We have followed and been excited by the modern quilting movement, and are thankful for the inspiration they bring to an ever-growing community of quilters. We are very happy to support them and their efforts.” said Randy Thomas, VP of Sales and Marketing for Janome America.
“Robert Kaufman Fabrics is beyond thrilled to help the Modern Quilt Guild present the premiere modern quilting show. The modern quilt community is so immensely talented and utterly inspiring, not to mention, it includes some of our favorite people! We simply can’t wait to have them all together in celebration of the art they create – dazzling quilts, amazing people, sharing, invigorating, rubbing elbows and just having fun! Is it next February yet?” said Kyle Sanchez, Director of Strategic Marketing for Robert Kaufman Fabrics.
QuiltCon, presented by The Modern Quilt Guild, will offer a unique quilt show experience that is influenced by modern design and the indie craft movement. No other quilt show offers this viewpoint on quilting. The Modern Quilt Guild is looking forward to welcoming the public and its members February 21-24, 2013, in Austin, Texas

{win it} Home Is Where the Quilt Is
The theme of the 2012 quilt contest to benefit the Alliance for American Quilts is “Home is Where the Quilt Is,” and it calls for small house-shaped quilts. Deadline is June 1, after which time the contest quilts will travel the country before being auctioned off on eBay next fall. Top prize is the winner’s pick of any HandiQuilter machine, and the winner will be picked by a panel of judges.
But every quilt entered will be virtually displayed on the Quilt Index, a respected online archive featuring over 50,000 quilts in museums and state documentation projects.Because the quilts are small and the theme is evocative, this contest lends itself well to a one-day workshop for quilters at every level.
Go to the nonprofit’s website for more, including size requirements, at www.QuiltAlliance.org. This terrific nonprofit documents, preserves and shares the stories of quilts and their makers and is a good organization for quilt shops to support.

City Quilter Hosts “Made in New York” Quilt Exhibition
The City Quilter is hosting another exhibition of quilts in New York City–which is bound to be a real treat for New Yorkers. Here are the details from the press release:
The City Quilter is organizing a quilt exhibition, "MADE IN NEW YORK: City Quilting," to be shown from September 22, 2009 through November 14, 2009 at the Williams Club , which is located at 24 East 39th Street. More than 60 quilts are expected to be hung. The quilts will be available for viewing from 8 am until 8 pm, every day.
For submission a quilt must have been made while the quilter was living or working in the New York metro area. The quilts will be juried.
As part of the show, there will be a special exhibition of Dear Jane quilts.
This exhibit follows The City Quilter’s successful show in Winter, 2007 that commemorated the 10th anniversary of our classroom-and our shop. At that time, 45 juried quilts were displayed for seven weeks at the Williams Club. The Club was pleased with the response, and has invited us back.Cathy Izzo, the shop’s co-owner commented: "There are so few opportunities for the public to see quilts in New York City, and the vast range of quilting styles will surprise–and please–all the visitors. We expect a big response to a show that will help advance New Yorkers’ interest in quilting."
